Type Via Guitar

David Neevel shows his recent invention: the email guitar.

WK recently allowed me some time to tackle a problem that plagues workers everywhere whether they are working in advertising or some other job that involves a lot of email typing. I’m talking about the problem of not being able to devote enough time practicing shredding the guitar. The solution of hooking a guitar up so that you could use it like a computer keyboard had been in my head for a few years and it was a real joy to get to follow through on it.

Check out his blog post for more info on how it works.

Edison Phonograph

A few weeks ago I had the chance to see/listen to an original Edison phonograph. Wax cylinders! I was visiting Nightstand Creations, a pretty amazing video/audio production house in New Jersey. They had a nice array of old recordings. Something I didn’t know about these phonographs: the cylinder spins but doesn’t move left or right. The entire horn moves across the cylinder as it plays!

The $100 Guitar Project

So, sometimes when I visit my parents they have articles clipped out of the newspaper for me. Most recently it was one about the $100 Guitar Project, which I must say is pretty cool. From their site:

On Oct 20, 2010, Nick Didkovsky and Chuck O’Meara (that’s us) bought a $100 electric guitar from Elderly Instruments. We did not know what it sounded like or if it even worked, but we were charmed by its no-name vibe and single bridge pickup that looks like an old radio.

The $100 Guitar passed through the hands of over 65 players, each of which recorded a piece with it (anywhere from a few seconds to 3 minutes long), and then passed it on to the next player. We got enough pieces for Bridge Records to release a double CD (see below!).

Here’s one of my favorite videos from their players:
