Live 45 at Spectrum – March 5

2016-NTQ-Live-45-at-Spectrum

NTQ is exciting to bring two premieres to Michael Vince’s Live 45 series at Spectrum NYC. The Live 45 series is inspired by settling down to a cup of coffee and an old 45 record, with concerts featuring two new “singles” by composers. Our program will premiere two major works by Spencer Arias and Diarmid Flatley.

Saturday, Mar 5 at 7pm
Spectrum NYC – 121 Ludlow St, New York, NY

Spencer Arias’ “Controversy for the sake of Controversy” is a response to the experience of controversial social media posts and the discussions that follow. The piece uses repetition as a way to iterate the repetitiveness that can occur during these discussions.

Diarmid Flatley’s “Six Regions of the k=3 d=6 B={0 4 6} Prime Constellation” is a drone composition in just intonation. Algorithmically generated tones are performed by the saxophonists, who are accompanied by sine tone drones based on the same intervallic relationships and stochastic structures. The result is a slowly shifting harmonic sound-mass which activates the space acoustically through standing waves, sum and difference tones, and beat frequencies.
